Welcome to the random time signature improvisation program
History:
Most of the music we are exposed to on a day to day basis is extremely uninteresting. Musicians continue to confine themselves and their music to how convention dictates music should sound. Almost all of the melody lines, harmonic progressions and rhythmic devices found in a modern pop song are identical to something that has come before.
Of course, this is not true of all music. Jazz, for example, has been pushing at the boundaries of music's definition for as long as it has existed. In addition more recently a resurgence in progressive music has created some extremely complex and unique music.
But a problem remains. By improvisation, a group is capable of creating completely dynamic melody lines. A talented group may even develop techniques for improvising the harmony of a piece. However, when it comes to rhythm, it is extremely difficult for groups to create truly dynamic music. In order for the whole group to be playing in the same time signature at the same time, pre-rehearsed combinations of time signatures and groupings must be used.
What is needed is a method that creates the potential for constantly changing time signatures, but also makes sure every member of the group is aware of the changes.
The solution:
With this goal in mind, I have created this program, which runs in your web browser (Tested in Internet Explorer and Firefox 1.5).
By using a large monitor or a projector in combination with the built in dynamic click track your group can make truly dynamic music! Good luck and enjoy.
